On-Page SEO Optimization: The Complete Checklist Without Paid Tools
On-page SEO is where you have the most control and most indie developers waste the most effort. Here's a field-tested checklist for optimizing title tags, meta descriptions, headers, URLs, images, and content — all using free tools and a browser.
I used to think on-page SEO was boring. Title tags? Meta descriptions? Header structure? I’d spend weeks on keyword research, build a beautiful site, write 5,000 words of genuinely useful content, and then slap on whatever title felt right. Then I’d wonder why my pages weren’t ranking.
The wake-up call came when I ran a content audit across one of my sites and found that 60% of my pages had title tags that were either duplicate, truncated, or generic enough to be invisible in search results. I had a pillar article targeting “free SEO audit” with the title “Audit Guide.” That’s it. Two words. No keyword. No compelling reason to click. No wonder the page had a 0.8% CTR despite ranking on page two.
On-page SEO is the part of SEO where you have near-total control. You can’t force another site to link to you. You can’t speed up Google’s indexing timeline. But you can control what’s on your page — every tag, every header, every word. And when you get it right, the impact is immediate and measurable.
This guide is a field-tested checklist built from optimizing hundreds of pages across multiple sites. Everything here uses free tools: your browser, Google Search Console, Google Sheets, and a few free browser extensions. No Ahrefs, no SEMrush, no paid audit tools.
Why On-Page SEO Matters More Than You Think
Before we get to the checklist, let me show you the data that changed my mind.
After fixing on-page elements across one site (titles, meta descriptions, header structure, internal links, and image alt text), I tracked the results over 90 days. The numbers:
- Organic impressions increased 2.3x — not because I added new pages, but because Google started understanding what my existing pages were about.
- Average CTR improved from 1.2% to 3.8% — better titles and meta descriptions directly improved click-through rates from search results.
- Average position improved by 4.2 spots — pages that were stuck at position 12-18 moved into the 8-14 range, with several breaking into the top 10.
These results came from on-page changes only. No new backlinks. No new content. No technical infrastructure changes. Just fixing what was already there.
Here’s the thing most indie developers miss: Google doesn’t rank pages based on vibes. It reads structured signals — title tags, header hierarchy, meta descriptions, URL patterns, alt text, internal link anchor text — and uses those signals to understand what your page is about. If those signals are unclear, contradictory, or missing, Google guesses. And Google’s guess is usually worse than your explicit instruction.
On-page SEO is you telling Google, in the clearest possible terms, what each page is about and who it’s for.
The On-Page SEO Checklist: 12 Elements That Matter
I’ve organized this checklist in order of impact. If you only have time for three things, do the first three. If you have an afternoon, do all twelve.
1. Title Tags (Highest Impact)
Your title tag is the single most important on-page element. It’s what Google displays as the clickable headline in search results, and it’s the strongest on-page signal for relevance.
What I got wrong for years: I wrote titles for humans (which is good) but forgot to include the target keyword (which is bad). Google needs to see the keyword in your title to confidently rank you for it. A title like “The Ultimate Guide” tells Google nothing. “The Ultimate Guide to Free SEO Audits” tells Google exactly what query this page answers.
The formula that works:
[Primary Keyword] | [Compelling Modifier] | [Brand]
Examples:
- “Free SEO Audit: The Complete Checklist for Indie Developers | ZensInk”
- “Keyword Research Without Ahrefs: 7 Free Methods That Actually Work”
- “Technical SEO Audit Without Paid Tools: Step-by-Step Guide”
Rules I follow:
- Put the primary keyword first. Google gives more weight to words at the beginning of the title tag. “Free SEO Audit Guide” outperforms “Guide to Free SEO Audits” for the keyword “free SEO audit.”
- Keep it under 60 characters. Google truncates titles around 60 characters (or 580 pixels). Truncated titles lose impact. Count characters, not just eyeball it.
- Include a compelling modifier. Words like “complete,” “step-by-step,” “without paid tools,” “for beginners,” “2026” — these trigger curiosity and improve CTR. But only use them if they’re accurate. Don’t say “2026” if you haven’t updated the content.
- Don’t keyword-stuff. “SEO Audit | Free SEO Audit Tool | SEO Audit Guide” is spammy and Google may rewrite it. One primary keyword, one modifier, done.
- Make every title unique. Duplicate titles confuse Google about which page to rank. I once had three pages all titled “Keyword Research Guide.” Google ranked none of them well. After making each title unique and specific, all three improved.
How to audit titles for free: Go to Google Search Console → Performance → Search results → filter by your site. Sort by impressions descending. Look at the pages with high impressions but low CTR (below 2%). These are pages where your title is showing up in search but nobody’s clicking. Rewrite those titles first.
You can also use Google’s site: operator to find duplicate titles:

If multiple pages show up, you have duplicates.
2. Meta Descriptions (High Impact for CTR)
Meta descriptions don’t directly affect rankings — Google has said this many times. But they dramatically affect click-through rate, which indirectly affects rankings. A higher CTR signals to Google that your result is relevant and useful.
What I see most indie developers do: Either skip the meta description entirely (letting Google auto-generate one, which is usually just the first 160 characters of the page, often a header or navigation text) or write something generic like “Learn about SEO.”
What actually works:
Write a 150-160 character description that:
- Includes the primary keyword (Google bolds matching keywords in search results).
- States what the reader will learn or get.
- Includes a subtle call to action.
- Creates urgency or curiosity.
Example for a page targeting “free SEO audit”:

That’s 155 characters. It includes the keyword, states the value proposition, mentions the specificity (12 elements), and has a subtle hook (“no paid tools required”).
The CTR experiment: I ran an informal experiment across 30 pages. For each page, I rewrote the meta description to include the target keyword and a specific value proposition. After 6 weeks, average CTR went from 1.4% to 3.1%. Same rankings, same content — just better descriptions.
When to let Google decide: Google rewrites meta descriptions about 60-70% of the time, especially for long-tail queries. It’ll pull a relevant snippet from your page that matches the specific query. This is fine — Google’s rewrite is usually well-targeted. But you should still write a good meta description because: (a) for your primary keyword, Google usually keeps your original, and (b) it serves as a fallback for queries where Google can’t find a better snippet.
3. Header Tag Structure (High Impact for Relevance Signals)
Header tags (H1-H6) create a hierarchical outline of your content. Google reads this outline to understand the structure and topics of your page.
The most common mistake: Using multiple H1 tags, or worse, using header tags for styling instead of structure. I’ve seen sites where the navigation links are H2 tags and the actual content headings are styled with CSS font-size but no semantic header.
The structure I use:
H1: One per page. Contains the primary keyword. This is the page's main topic.
H2: Major section. Contains the secondary keyword or topic.
H3: Sub-section within an H2.
H4: Detail within an H3. (Use sparingly.)
H2: Next major section.
H3: Sub-section.
Think of your headers as a table of contents. If someone only read your H1 and H2s, they should understand the full scope of the page. If your headers read like a random word salad, Google is confused too.
Practical rules:
- Exactly one H1 per page. This is non-negotiable. The H1 should contain your primary keyword and match (or closely resemble) your title tag.
- Use H2s for major sections. Aim for 4-8 H2s in a typical 3,000-5,000 word article. Each H2 should contain a relevant keyword or clearly describe the section’s topic.
- Don’t skip levels. Don’t jump from H2 to H4. If you need a sub-heading under an H2, use H3.
- Don’t use headers for styling. If you need big text but it’s not a structural heading, use CSS
font-size. Don’t pollute your header hierarchy. - Include keywords in headers naturally. Don’t force it — but if a section is about “meta descriptions,” the H2 should say “Meta Descriptions” or “How to Write Meta Descriptions,” not “Section 2.”
How to audit headers for free: Open any page in your browser, right-click → “Inspect.” In the Elements panel, search for <h. Check that there’s exactly one <h1>, and that the hierarchy is logical.
Alternatively, use a free browser extension like SEO Meta in Click or Detailed SEO Extension. One click shows you all headers on a page.
4. URL Structure (Medium-High Impact)
URLs are a minor ranking signal, but they affect user behavior and are displayed in search results. A clean URL builds trust and reinforces relevance.
The rules:
- Short and descriptive.

on-page-seois read as three words.on_page_seois read as one word. - Include the primary keyword. Not the full title — just the keyword.
/keyword-research-guidefor an article titled “Keyword Research Without Ahrefs: 7 Free Methods.” - Lowercase only. URLs are case-sensitive on some servers. Stick to lowercase to avoid issues.
- No unnecessary parameters. Avoid
?id=123&session=abc. If you must use parameters, userel="canonical"to point to the clean URL.
What I changed across my sites: I went through every URL and shortened them to 3-5 words max. Old URLs like /blog/seo/2026/03/how-to-do-keyword-research-without-ahrefs-for-free became /keyword-research-without-ahrefs. I set up 301 redirects from the old URLs. Within a few weeks, rankings improved modestly — not dramatically, but enough to confirm that cleaner URLs helped.
Important: If you change a URL, always set up a 301 redirect from the old URL to the new one. Without a redirect, you lose all existing rankings and backlinks.
5. Image Optimization (Medium Impact, High Technical Value)
Images affect SEO in two ways: directly through image search traffic, and indirectly through page speed (unoptimized images slow down your page, which hurts Core Web Vitals).
The checklist for every image:
- Descriptive filename.

- Good:

- Good:
- Compress the file. Use a free tool like Squoosh (squoosh.app) or TinyPNG. A 2MB hero image should be 150-300KB after compression. I’ve seen page load times drop by 2-3 seconds just from image compression.
- Use next-gen formats. WebP is 25-35% smaller than JPEG at the same quality. AVIF is even smaller but has less browser support. If you’re using Astro or Next.js, image optimization is often built in.
- Lazy load below-the-fold images. Add
loading="lazy"to images that aren’t visible when the page first loads. This speeds up initial render. Modern browsers support this natively. - Set explicit width and height. This prevents layout shift (a Core Web Vitals metric). Always include
widthandheightattributes on<img>tags.
How I audit images for free: I use Google PageSpeed Insights (pagespeed.web.dev) — enter your URL and look at the “Diagnostics” section. It’ll flag unoptimized images, images without alt text, and images causing layout shift. Fix everything it reports.
6. Internal Linking and Anchor Text (Medium Impact, Often Neglected)
Internal links pass authority between pages on your site. The anchor text you use tells Google what the linked page is about — this is a strong relevance signal.
What most indie developers get wrong: They use generic anchor text like “click here” or “read more.” This tells Google nothing about the destination page. Or worse, they don’t link internally at all — each page is an orphan with no connection to the rest of the site.
The rules:
- Use descriptive anchor text. If you’re linking to your keyword research guide, use “keyword research guide” as the anchor text — not “click here” and not “this article.”
- Vary your anchor text naturally. Don’t use the exact same anchor text for every internal link to a page. Mix it up: “keyword research guide,” “how to do keyword research,” “free keyword research tools.” Google is sensitive to over-optimization.
- Link from high-authority pages to new content. Your most trafficked pages (usually the homepage and top blog posts) pass the most authority. Link from these pages to new articles to help them get discovered.
- Link contextually, not in footers. A link within the body of an article is worth more than a link in a sidebar or footer. Google weights contextual links higher.
- Aim for 3-5 internal links per article. Each article should link to 3-5 other relevant pages on your site, and 3-5 other pages should link back to it. This creates a web of relevance.
I wrote an entire separate guide on internal linking strategy, so I won’t repeat everything here. But if you do nothing else from this section, go through your top 10 trafficked pages and add 2-3 contextual internal links from each to your newer, less-discovered content.
7. Content Depth and Structure (Medium Impact)
This isn’t about word count — it’s about completeness. Google wants to rank pages that fully answer the searcher’s question. A page that answers a query completely will outrank a page that answers it superficially, even if the superficial page has more backlinks.
How I evaluate content depth:
- Search your target keyword. Open the top 5 ranking pages. Read them. Note what they cover and what they miss.
- Cover everything they cover, plus what they miss. Your content should be a superset of the top results. If all top results have an FAQ section, you need one too. If none of them discuss a relevant sub-topic, that’s your opportunity to differentiate.
- Structure for scannability. No one reads 5,000 words of wall-of-text. Use short paragraphs (2-4 sentences), bullet points, bold text for key concepts, and tables for comparisons. Google extracts featured snippets from well-structured content.
- Answer questions directly. If there’s a “People Also Ask” question related to your topic, answer it explicitly in your content. Format the answer as a clear statement (not buried in a paragraph) so Google can extract it as a featured snippet.
The “completeness” test: After writing your content, ask: “If someone read only this page, would they fully understand the topic? Would they need to go anywhere else?” If the answer is yes (they’d need to visit another site), your content isn’t complete enough. Add what’s missing.
8. Keyword Placement and Density (Medium Impact)
Where you place your keyword on the page matters. Google gives different weight to keywords based on their location.
The placement checklist:
- Title tag. Primary keyword in the first 60 characters. (Covered above.)
- H1 tag. Primary keyword, ideally at the beginning.
- First 100 words. Include the primary keyword naturally in the opening paragraph. Google places weight on early-page content.
- At least one H2. Include the primary or secondary keyword in at least one H2.
- URL. Primary keyword in the slug. (Covered above.)
- Image alt text. Primary keyword in at least one image’s alt text.
- Meta description. Primary keyword in the first 155 characters. (Covered above.)
- Throughout the body. Use the keyword and its variations naturally. Don’t count density percentages — just make sure it appears in context where it makes sense.
On keyword density: Don’t obsess over density percentages. The old advice of “2-3% keyword density” is outdated and leads to unnatural writing. Instead, focus on writing naturally about the topic. If you’re writing about on-page SEO, you’ll naturally use the phrase “on-page SEO” multiple times without trying. If you have to force it, your content is probably off-topic.
What to avoid: Don’t use hidden text (text the same color as the background) to stuff keywords. Don’t use tiny font sizes for keywords. Google’s algorithms detect these tactics and will penalize you. These are outdated tactics from the early 2000s, but I still see them occasionally — especially on sites that use outdated SEO advice.
9. Canonical Tags (Low-Medium Impact, Preventative)
Canonical tags tell Google which version of a page is the “master” version. They prevent duplicate content issues when the same content is accessible through multiple URLs.
When you need canonical tags:
- www vs. non-www. If your site is accessible at both
yoursite.comandwww.yoursite.com, pick one as canonical and redirect or canonical the other. - HTTP vs. HTTPS. If you haven’t redirected all HTTP traffic to HTTPS, add canonical tags pointing to the HTTPS version.
- URL parameters. If your URLs have tracking parameters (
?utm_source=...) or sorting parameters (?sort=price), add a canonical tag pointing to the clean URL. - Paginated content. If you split content across multiple pages, use
rel="next"andrel="prev"(though Google has deprecated this, it’s still good practice) or self-canonical each page. - Syndicated content. If your content appears on another site (Medium, Dev.to, etc.), make sure the syndicated version has a canonical tag pointing back to your original.
The canonical tag:

What I learned the hard way: One of my sites had index.html URLs that were different from directory URLs (/about/ vs /about/index.html). Google indexed both versions, splitting the authority. After adding canonical tags and redirecting the .html versions, the consolidated pages ranked better within weeks.
10. Schema Markup / Structured Data (Low-Medium Impact, Growing)
Schema markup is code that explicitly tells Google what type of content is on your page. Google uses it to generate rich results (star ratings, FAQ accordions, breadcrumb trails) in search results.
Why it matters: Rich results take up more space in search results, are more visually prominent, and have higher CTR. A FAQ rich result can double your SERP real estate for free.
What to implement:
- Article schema. For blog posts: title, description, author, publish date, image.
- BreadcrumbList schema. Shows the page’s position in your site hierarchy.
- FAQPage schema. If your article has a FAQ section, mark it up. This is the highest-ROI schema for content sites — it generates expandable FAQ accordions in search results.
- Organization schema. For your homepage: name, logo, sameAs links to social profiles.
How to implement for free:
Use Google’s free Structured Data Markup Helper (google.com/webmasters/markup-helper/) to generate JSON-LD code. Or write it manually — it’s just JSON in a <script> tag:

How to validate for free: Use Google’s Rich Results Test (search.google.com/test/rich-results). Enter your URL and it’ll show you which schema types Google detected and if there are any errors.

11. Mobile Optimization (Medium Impact, Non-Negotiable)
Google uses mobile-first indexing, meaning it primarily uses the mobile version of your page for indexing and ranking. If your page looks great on desktop but broken on mobile, Google will rank it based on the broken mobile version.
The mobile checklist:
- Responsive design. Your layout should adapt to screen size. No horizontal scrolling on mobile.
- Font size. Body text should be at least 16px on mobile. Smaller text is hard to read and Google flags it.
- Tap targets. Buttons and links should be at least 48x48px with adequate spacing. Google flags tap targets that are too close together.
- No intrusive interstitials. Pop-ups that cover the main content on mobile are penalized. Cookie banners are exempt if they’re minimal.
- Viewport meta tag. Ensure
<meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1">is in your<head>.
How to audit for free: Google PageSpeed Insights has a mobile tab that checks all of these. You can also use Chrome DevTools → Toggle device toolbar to see how your page looks on different screen sizes.
12. Page Speed / Core Web Vitals (Medium Impact)
Page speed is a confirmed ranking factor. Google measures it through Core Web Vitals: Largest Contentful Paint (LCP), Interaction to Next Paint (INP), and Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS).
I’ve written a complete guide on Core Web Vitals, so here’s the short version of what to check:
LCP (should be under 2.5s): The time it takes for the largest visible element to render. Usually an image or a large text block. Fix by compressing images, using a CDN, and removing render-blocking resources.
INP (should be under 200ms): The responsiveness of your page to user interactions. Fix by reducing JavaScript execution time and deferring non-critical scripts.
CLS (should be under 0.1): How much the layout shifts during loading. Fix by setting explicit dimensions on images and ads, and avoiding dynamically injected content above the fold.
How to audit for free: Google PageSpeed Insights gives you both lab data (from a simulated test) and field data (from real Chrome users). Focus on the field data — it reflects actual user experience.
The speed optimization I recommend first: Most indie developers think page speed requires complex engineering. It doesn’t. Here’s what actually moves the needle, ranked by effort-to-impact ratio:
- Compress your images. This single change often cuts page weight by 50-70%. Use Squoosh or TinyPNG — drag and drop, no technical knowledge needed. A 2MB hero image becomes 200KB with imperceptible quality loss.
- Remove unused JavaScript. If you’re shipping a React/Vue SPA with client-side rendering for what could be a static page, you’re paying a massive performance tax. Consider server-side rendering or static generation (Astro, Next.js SSG) for content-heavy pages.
- Use a CDN. Cloudflare’s free tier provides a global CDN that caches your static assets at edge locations worldwide. This alone can cut TTFB (Time to First Byte) from 800ms to under 200ms for visitors far from your origin server.
- Defer non-critical CSS and JS. Add
deferto your<script>tags and consider inlining critical CSS. Most frameworks handle this automatically if configured correctly. - Enable text compression. Brotli or gzip compression on your server reduces HTML, CSS, and JS transfer sizes by 60-80%. Most hosting platforms enable this by default, but verify — I’ve found it disabled on surprising number of sites.
I once took a site from a 35 (poor) to 85 (good) PageSpeed score just by compressing images and enabling Cloudflare’s CDN. No code changes. No framework migration. Two hours of work for a 50-point improvement.
The On-Page SEO Audit Process
Now that you know the 12 elements, here’s how to audit your existing pages systematically.
Step 1: Export Your Pages from GSC
Go to Google Search Console → Performance → Search results. Set the date range to the last 28 days. Export all pages with their impressions, clicks, CTR, and average position. You’ll get a spreadsheet of every page Google has data for.
Step 2: Identify Priority Pages
Sort by impressions descending. These are the pages Google is showing most often in search results. Focus your on-page optimization on the top 20-30 pages — they have the most to gain.
Within those top pages, identify:
- High impressions, low CTR (<2%): The title and meta description need work. Google is showing your page, but nobody’s clicking.
- High impressions, poor position (>10): The page is close to page one. On-page improvements could push it over.
- High impressions, decent CTR, good position (4-10): The page is already working. Small tweaks could push it to position 1-3.
Step 3: Run the 12-Point Checklist
For each priority page, go through the 12 elements:
- Does the title tag include the primary keyword and is it under 60 characters?
- Does the meta description include the keyword, state the value, and is it under 160 characters?
- Is there exactly one H1 with the primary keyword?
- Is the URL clean, short, and keyword-rich?
- Do all images have descriptive alt text?
- Are there 3-5 internal links with descriptive anchor text?
- Is the content complete compared to top-ranking competitors?
- Is the primary keyword in the title, H1, first 100 words, at least one H2, URL, and an image alt text?
- Is there a canonical tag pointing to the correct URL?
- Is there relevant schema markup (especially FAQ)?
- Does the page pass mobile-friendliness tests?
- Does the page pass Core Web Vitals?
I track this in a simple Google Sheet — one row per page, one column per checklist item, with a checkbox (✓ or ✗). It takes 5-10 minutes per page. For 30 pages, that’s about 4 hours of auditing.
Step 4: Fix Issues by Priority
Don’t try to fix everything at once. Prioritize by impact:
First pass (highest ROI):
- Fix all title tags and meta descriptions on high-impression pages.
- Ensure every page has exactly one H1 with the primary keyword.
- Add internal links from your top pages to newer content.
Second pass (medium ROI):
- Add alt text to all images.
- Implement FAQ schema on pages that have Q&A sections.
- Clean up URL structures with 301 redirects.
Third pass (preventative):
- Verify canonical tags on all pages.
- Fix Core Web Vitals issues.
- Audit mobile experience.
Step 5: Monitor Results
After making changes, wait 2-4 weeks. Then check GSC again:
- Did impressions increase? (Title tag and content changes should show here.)
- Did CTR improve? (Meta description and title improvements show here.)
- Did average position improve? (Overall on-page optimization shows here.)
Track the before/after numbers in your spreadsheet. This data will tell you which changes had the biggest impact, so you can prioritize future optimization work.
Common On-Page SEO Mistakes I See
After auditing dozens of sites — my own and others’ — here are the mistakes I see most frequently:
Mistake 1: Optimizing for search engines instead of users. Yes, you need keywords in the right places. But if your title tag reads like a keyword list (“SEO Audit | Free SEO Audit Tool | SEO Checker”), users won’t click it, and Google will eventually figure out that your CTR is terrible. Write for humans first, then make sure the keyword is there.
Mistake 2: Set-and-forget. On-page SEO isn’t a one-time task. Your title that ranked well six months ago might be underperforming now because competitors improved theirs. I review my top 20 pages quarterly and adjust titles, descriptions, and content based on GSC data.
Mistake 3: Ignoring the data you already have. Google Search Console is giving you free data about which pages have impressions, which have clicks, and which have neither.
